“I’ve never had so much hope…”

During the very successful “Jane’s Walk” held Saturday morning, I overheard that comment being made from one participant to another.

And I thought you should hear it too.

It is the reason so many of us are pushing forward the “urban agenda” in this city, and hearing comments like that one keeps the momentum going.  Apparently, he has never felt so much hope for the future of our city as he did when he saw so many engaged and concerned citizens participating in the walk, discussing the numerous possibilities Walkerville has and envisioning it’s glowing future.

Mita Williams deserves much praise for her hard work in the 11th hour organizing of “Jane’s Walk” this year in Windsor.  Andrew Foot and I were mere foot soldiers for this event, but are thrilled that we could help out.

The walk was covered extensively by numerous other blogs, so I will just point your way in their direction.

Many thanks goes out to all the participants for making this event a roaring success!

As was mentioned earlier, this walk was planned in two days, and we must apologise to those who didn’t receive adequate notice. We will be making up for this next year, as I’m sure there will be multiple walks occuring in different parts of the city, led by the residents of those neighbourhood. This is what Jane Jacobs believed; that the residents know their community the best and are the ones who will be solely responsible for it’s health. No mega-projects or top-heavy bureaucratic “fixes” will do this, she notes. Only the residents taking responsibility for their home.

We couldn’t agree more!

    That’s so awesome to hear!

I really wanted to go.. unfortunately I had work.. I was going to bring 2 friends along too but they wouldn’t go without me. I think this could be a great success especially if the word is put out further in advance.

I feel sorry I didn’t know about this event. I would be glad to capture some of beautiful sites of Walkervile, well some other time.

It would be nice if next year some walks were planned for areas which are in desperate need of development and tlc, to help stimulate more growth and more healthy neighbourhoods. Good job everyone.

      Are you volunteering, Kevin? ;)

Just (sort of) joking, though the best people to lead others through a neigbourhood of interest are the residents of that neighbourhood itself!

I agree that your desire to focus on “areas which are in desperate need of development and tlc” should be addressed. Jane’s Walk 2010 should include the Sandwich and Ford City neigbourhoods.

If anyone lives in these ‘hoods (or any others) and are interested in hosting a Jane’s Walk next year, please drop us a line. We’ll help you out in any way we can!

Count me in for next year for my neighbourhood (west Crawford East to downtown) and for the war zone to the south.

I would love to volunteer but unfortunately due to the tough economic times in Windsor and elsewhere, I was forced to relocate back to Toronto, as I was unable to find work since I moved to Windsor last August. I will gladly come down and participate next year.
