ScaleDown Radio, June 17, 2008

Mark and Chris in the studio

Mark finally gets beat up on-air!

Apparently, sensationalism isn’t beneath us either!  I don’t know if Mark and I are getting better at hosting this radio show, or our guests are just more interesting than we are, but ScaleDown Radio is getting better and better with each passing week!

So today we Had another in-studio guest joining us. Andrew Foot, of International Metropolis and Windsor Heritage Committee fame, joined us to help us understand exactly what went down at last nights council meeting. There was one heritage designation approved, one denied and a church for sale for 1$. Good times, indeed!

Also, the last time we had Andrew on the show it was over the telephone and Mark and him were rather tame. So, I decided to put the two scrappers in a cage together and see what happens. They didn’t dissappoint me, though most of their scratches occurred off-air during the break. Shucks!

Also joining us via telephone was Enzo Mancuso from the Erie Street BIA. If any of you are familiar with my posts, you know that I am a big fan of this BIA and desperately want to know the secrets of their success. They know what they want and they know how to get it. They have built one of the most successful commercial corridors in the city and the rest of the BIAs need to learn how. Enzo gave us a few tips and insights into what the Erie Street community is up to this summer. It sounds like they are continually building upon their successes.

So a big thanks goes out to everyone for helping to make the radio show a success! It was fun, as always.

  • Music: Naked Ape, Indian,
  • Perilelle, High Horse and
  • Sarah Craig, Breakwall
  • Lead in tune, as always, was If I Had To Eat You by Ten Indians

    Enjoy!

Yeah - you’re right. You’re much more fun when you’ve been drinking ;)

Another great program! Good issues and far as I’m concern, Erie street is thee premiere destination in Windsor and Walkerville could be the second one with more work!

I also fully agree with Andrew Foot on the Festival Plaza and Charles Clarke square..they’re wastelands of asphalt and concrete, totally disconnected from the downtown and the city in general. Walk over there anytime on the weekend and you will find nothing except huge heat sumps sucking up the day’s heat to release it at night to make the core even more uncomfortable.

The problem is that this city stills has its head locked under the hood of some car and they are trying to make these places safe for the sub-urbanites to come to, much like a mall! God forbid that sub-urbanites feel uncomfortable with the great unwashed of the city and have to feel and see them, let alone have a parking space in a straight line of sight, so they don’t get confused having to walk a few blocks of downtown.

I suspect why the Festival Plaza was moved from the core to were it is today, totally disconnected from the city, is that seniors in the geared to income highrise don’t have the same voice or political clout that those that bought the higher price condo along Riverside Dive. and that is the only reason for locating it there!

The Festival Plaza is not an intimate space but a glorified parking lot made to look like something else it is NOT!

And don’t get me started on the one way streets in the core!

This heritage debacle fully rests on the city’s shoulders! They knew exactly what they were and are doing by not filling the position of Heritage Planner! And were is the new city department of Culture and Heritage in all this…totally silent! Yet they are paid big bucks and what if anything have they done, except hand out a few plaques at city council meetings. Inquiring minds want to know!
