R.I.P. Ashleigh

By Chris | June 20, 2008 |

Ashleigh, the magic cooling treeIt’s a sad day in the Holt household.  Ashleigh, our beloved Ash tree, which has protected our home from the scorching southern summer sun for decades, has finally succumbed to the dreaded Emerald Ash Borer.

While she will continue on to heat our home in the winter months, she will be missed as our cooling bills during the intense summer months will be astronomical.  Especially in my third-floor bedroom.  Eeyouch!

Hmmm.  Ashleigh’s demise does open up some southern sunlight for solar panels though.  I guess there may just be a light at the end of this tunnel!

    And a windmill to!

Don’t cha ya just the global village though! The emerald ash bore came via ship of a cargo wooden pallets, Dengue fever carrying mosquito via car tires from Viet Nam to New Orleans. Oak trees are disappearing in California and now Nevada from some other imported bug!

Hey! Where is your rain barrel if that is your house on the left in the picture! Should be water harvesting Chris!

Everyone keeps telling me the city has a special day at the Mall every spring where you can buy those rain barrels and other recycling goodies off a truck for decent prices. Somehow I always miss the ad in the paper, or finding out about it. The rain barrels thing sounds like a great idea. I’m not lucky enough to have an indoor wading pool like Chris though! ;)

A cistern! If you fix your basement the right way, you could create lets say a 10,000 gallon reservoir for use in your toilets, showers, doing laundry, watering the garden, It won’t save you from the excessive water usage bills or sewer charges this city has boot stamped on everyone but when the real cost of fresh water kicks in, in the near future you will be ahead of the game!
