Money for nothing and parks for free

By Mark | May 30, 2011 |

I don’t know what kinda game administration is playing but

http://www.citywindsor.ca/DisplayAttach.asp?AttachID=22696

A public park being rented out as a  mega bar patio for the amount of $1 per year. 5 years with 2 - 5 year options to renew

If I’m correct the administration said this park was not for sale when approached by a potential bar owner last year

If I’m correct, no public consultation with residents, adjacent bldg owners, adjacent bar owners

Now of course I write this article in conflict as I am one of the neighboring bldg owners who rents to a nightclub that was not consulted

Any one consider the drink prices of this club vs the rest of downtown? Now the city may subsidize their patio so they can further undercut drink prices of other patios. Thats the history

Anyone consider that rent for $1 per year for 15 years might be a bit of an unfair advantage against bar patio owners that pay some pretty hefty patio encroachment fees? no public tender, no request of other adjacent bldg owners if they may too be interested?

Wow. Either I haven’t been downtown long enough or I’ve been downtown too long cause something in denmark sure smells pretty rotten

My bet is this gets shelved before I get a chance to speak at council. Any takers?

This sure isn’t the Mayor’s Downtown I remember when I went before him on licence control while he tried to restrict bars I used to own from opening.

this seems incredibly unfair and a bit off base. while i might be ok with a patio being allowed there, as you say, why is there no public consultation and putting out to tender for other people to potentially use/build on?

Rino not to mention I have a perfectly good kitchen trailer that could see a popup restaurant open on this site

What about not offering the space to the university or college?
Did this same administration not know what every councillor know for a Lon home we’re now being told???

Couldn’t the college use it for a final
Project each year for theirs da aping school?

Kind of feeds the backroom dealing rumours going around this town, doesn’t it?

QUESTION: why would WHitestar not simply pay the same patio fee for extending their patio over the park as bars do for extending their patio over a sidewalk?????

The more you dig the stinkier it gets

What would that fee translate to $$$-wise, Mark?

Now remember it’s dependent on how much of the 5700 ft would be patio but other than the beach, I know of no patio that size on city property.

If they had the washrooms 5,700 ft would yield 500PLUS capacity. I thought we were trying to get away from mega bars but this would be a Mega patio bar.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a brilliant idea if properly executed but do we want a bar with a history of the cheapest drink prices to have an unfair competitive advantage on their rent…

    CONSPIRACY THEORY ALERT
I predict all the councillors to vigorously protest their outrage
However, I dont think someone would attempt so bold a move without knowing they had 5 votes in their pocket. Here’s to the 5 councillors that dost protest too much
