Making Art out of Sprawl

By Chris | April 17, 2008 |

Ahh! Where would we be in this city if it wasn’t for our friends? This post is brought to you compliments of Paul and Leesa. Enjoy

ADAM SHOALTS
Country fields stretched as far as the eye could see, punctuated here and there by thick stands of deciduous woodlots. It was a quiet, sleepy little out of the way rural town.
Creeks flowed through the fields, and in spring teemed with spawning northern pike. Deer and coyotes would pass through the woods and over the rich agricultural lands.
Then, seemingly overnight, all this changed.

What was once a rural paradise and small farming community, was rapidly transformed into a massive, impersonal, monotonous, sprawling sea of suburban housing.

…and part of the solution to this mess? Education and evaluation, my friends. Windsor’s artist collective, Artcite is helping out in this regard…

Artcite is accepting submissions for a photography project in the upcoming exhibition, tentatively titled “Big Box (Check out this Sprawl)” in conjunction with the annual Smogfest events.

We are looking for photographs (colour, black & white, including digitally-printed photos), unframed and up to 11″ x 14″ that investigate issues surrounding the big box phenomena in the Windsor & Essex area. Photographs of big box developments, big box development impact on the land, community, etc., farm land lost to housing developments, vacant spaces not being used while new buildings are erected, demolished buildings making way for new developments, urban blight, etc.

There is no limit on how many photographs each person submits, however, please include a label on the back of each photograph to guarantee its return. The photographs will be featured on a large wall in the gallery.

We are accepting submissions from May 2 - May 20 (to be included in the launch of the exhibition), with an opportunity to include photographs throughout the May 23 - June 21 exhibition run.

We look forward to your participation!

For more info., please contact Artcite Inc. at 519-977-6564 or [email protected]

I know that there are tons of photographers out there in the blogoshpere that can help spread the word about the effects of Big-Box. Get in touch with Artcite and help make this exhibit one that really hits home.
