Is Detroit Really The New Berlin? Tonight @ MOCAD

By Chris | April 30, 2009 |

…AND, there’s a Windsor connection!

This panel discussion taking place at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit includes Windsor’s own Manager of Urban Design and Community Development, Jim Yanchula!

This panel discussion will focus on “New Urban Models” and how Detroit may be a unique incubator for those ideas. The successes and failures of models presented by other cities, and how they may be implemented in the city of Detroit today, will be explored by a panel including:

Anirban Adhya —Detroit Studio and SYNCH Research Group, College of Architecture and Design, Lawrence Technological University
Luis Croquer — MOCAD Director and recent New York transplant
Catherine Kelly — Publisher of The Michigan Citizen newspaper
Gina Reichert — Design 99
Jim Yanchula — Manager, Urban Design & Community Development City of Windsor

This promises to be a fun event and I would encourage those who have the time to attend. I’ve always believed that our two cities, Windsor and Detroit, will be riding the economic wave together and we will share a common future.

About MOCAD;

Located on Woodward and Garfield between the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and the Detroit Institute of the Arts, Wayne State University and the College for Creative Studies, the museum is an innovative addition to Detroit’s Cultural Center, and functions as a hub for the exploration of emerging ideas in the contemporary arts. The 22,000 square foot building, a former auto dealership, has been simply renovated to maintain it’s historic character. With its raw, flexible and cavernous spaces, the building is well suited to the exhibition of contemporary art. Our ambitious series of public programs includes lectures, musical performances, films, literary readings and educational activities for children.

    If only our elected officials listen to people like Jim Yanchula instead of their overpriced consultants from out of town we might actually be moving forward already. But then if it isn’t glitzy and glamourous then forget it.

    I’d be curious to know if anyone has looked at bringing a streetcar / tram / light rail back to Windsor.. It’s glitzy and ambitious enough that even Eddie would go for it, and it could be one of the most important steps this city could take to secure its future in a future of volatile oil prices and a deminishing supply of black gold.

    Might sound like a pipe dream, but so does the canal project.
    Plus it’s been done before in our very city.

    My fascination with mass transit was sparked after living in Japan. Cities designed around transit, cyclists, and pedestrians rather than around cars. Foot traffic increases and your mom and pop local stores thrive. I have refused to own a car sinse I returned. Is anyone in government on the same thought path here or am I hopeless?
