I’m trying to figure out what the heck happened to PAC, Rat!

It looks like PAC is being rebranded the Planning Standing Committee, and will now only invite 3 citizen members to apply! Like I have a hope-in-hell now!

It’s not too late to apply. When you wake up all hungover from St. Patty’s day, you still have time to get involved!

Realistically though, will this not result in the same people on the same boards (assuming they reapply)?? What is the likelihood of a new member being selected if every member of the current board reapplies?

All we can do is try, Randolph. I have been applying for the Planning Advisory Committee for the past decade and a half, knowing full well (actually, I should say ‘assuming’ due to my outspokeness of land-use planning in this city) that they’re not going to accept me as a member. At least we can say we’ve tried to work with the city within the parameters they’ve set out.

The recent ABC review was supposed to address the political aspect of committee appointments.

I do know that there are some committees that rarely have the full compliment of citizen members, though.

There’s no chance that the Windsor Bicycle Committee will remain the same, since we were down to a small number of participants by the end of the term. I suspect that other committees are in a similar position.

The appointment process itself seems quite bizantine and I wonder whether there shouldn’t be an arms-length ABC to choose ABC members?

I think the issue of PAC was actually deferred in the implementation process, to seek more input.

Personally, I’ve chosen activism over participation in dealing with the City. I prefer to work outside rather than participate in what masquerades as public input these days.

I think both activism and participation are effective.
Nothing wrong with making a presentation or writing letters to existing committee’s.

I agree with Paul that participation on committee’s is not very productive. Most of my time spent on city committee’s is spent listening to consultants reports filled with data telling us what we should do. The committee serving only as the necessary public endorsement of the action already desired. The committee is a sort of focus group that simply tweaking the desired action making it more palatable to the public

I remember when I spoke out at CVB board (now TWEPI) at a 4 hour presentation against a branding exercise that would have been futile, it felt like I was ostracized. My time there was spent rubberstamping the reorganization that was going to take place regardless. I spent countless hours listening to presentations affirming and reaffirming we were going in the right direction.

However, Some committee work has been productive. On CCSERT (City Center safety enhancement resource team) I was able to introduce the concept of an Hospitality resource panel (albeit 7 years and the thing still doesn’t run right). On CCWCIP (City Center West community improvment plan) I introduced the concept of urban village to the city. (Windsor star says I was first person to publicly use the term in Windsor even though it was very dated by then)
