South Windsor Sidewalk Shame

By Chris | January 21, 2009 |

Ask, and ye shall receive!

South Windsor resident Steve Biro has taken the offer in our “Reclaim the sidewalks” post seriously - as I had hoped!

Steve didn’t need to go far from his home to find a plethora of offending business owners who refuse to clear their sidewalks. Yes, there are actually sidewalks under those mounds of snow. (all images linked to larger images, move pointer over for addresses) It’s enough to get your blood boiling, isn’t it?

3109 Dougall @ Nottingham, in front of Dr. Ghilzon orthodontist. Yes, that's also a bus stop. Safe, eh?

private residence, 3400 bock of Dougle Ave.

3354 Dougall Ave, in front of McDonald's restaurant

With addresses and all.  Thanks for sloughing it over those impenetrable snow cliffs, Steve!  You just made the By-Law enforcement officers work that much easier!  Hopefully something comes of it.

Now, are there any more law breakers out there, folks?

i thought the policy was “why plow when it all melts sooner or later” but I saw workers digging out the bus stop this morning on dougall and cabana.

Hehe — now THIS is democracy in action!

(Which reminds me — I’d highly recommend the book Getting a Grip: Clarity, Creativity and Courage in a World Gone Mad by Frances Moore Lappé. It talks extensively about the purpose of democracy in action in building and strengthening communities)

I think it’s fair to note that the walkway in front of Dr. Ghilzon’s office is now clear. That’s the one with the picture of the sure seal ad on the bus stop bench, it was done later yesterday before the pics were posted. I’m unsure if the enforcement officers were out there or not but the other businesses still had covered walks just half an hour ago when I went by.

The whole Walker road clusterf**k/nightmare… I dropped my car off at Canadian tire and had 3 hours to kill. I thought my daughter and i would walk around and do some consumin’… oh wait silly me there were no sidewalks and the few I did find were covered in a foot of snow. We were almost killed trying to walk next door to value village… wow great design out there! What a shame that you have to literally drive from store to store as there seems to be no real safe way to get around on foot out there. Oh well just one more reason to avoid that miserable part of the world.

That’s one area I would love to photograph, Ryan! I rarely, if ever go out there, let alone with my camera. I was out there over the Spendmas vacation and counted no less than three people walking down the middle of Walker Road because the sidewalks are completely gone!

I was on a mobile delivery route along this stretch of Dougall last winter and the businesses along there were horrible. The TD Bank was one of the worst. The WFCU actually was one of the first to clear their sidewalk. Harveys never seemed to clear. Unless you are driving to/from these businesses, don’t bother. Howard - just as bad. My wife walked home from the Maul and lost count of how many properties were not shoveled - DAYS after the snow had ended. Even those homes near the ice cream stand weren’t shoveled. Why don’t they pull the parking offenses drones off their usual beat and re-assign them to busting chops where people don’t clear the snow off sidewalks?

Here in south walkerville, good corporate neighbour is Windsor Chapel Funeral Home, always out as soon as it *starts* snowing, and keeps working until every inch of their property is clear. We have a couple other business along Tecumseh who are good about it as well, but yes… most just wait for it to melt. Grrrrr.

Insane how businesses and home owners in Windsor refuse to shovel their sidewalks.

Hope it gets better this year.
