IN THE NEWS
- General Motors Fear’s Liquidation
General Motors (GM) auditors have announced a “substantial doubt” over the ability of the firm to stay afloat, following ongoing losses and the struggle to generate cash flow. 2009 will be a “challenging” year for GM the auditors added. GM has already posted a US $30.9 billion loss for 2008 and plans to cut 47,000 jobs this year, as well as admitting that it might need another US $22.6 billion government loan to survive. GM also fears the possible bankruptcy could lead to a reluctance of consumers willing to buy bankrupt carmakers’ vehicles. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/7926258.stm
- US Public Transport Use Highest in 2008
2008 was an incredible year for public transportation in America. The American Public Transportation Association figures show that there was nearly 10.7 billion trips using public transportation in 2008, the highest level since 1956, and that public transportation use increased 38 percent since 1995. These are record numbers, which indicate that people are looking for cleaner, cheaper, and more efficient ways to travel. http://t4america.org/blog/archives/724
- Scrap Car Scrapping Schemes
Many of Europe’s politicians are following the trend of providing financial incentives to “vehicle scrapping schemes”, which encourage people to replace old cars with new ones. The schemes are touted as environment-friendly, despite evidence that it can do more harm than good. Germany initiated a scheme whereby car owners are being paid 2.500 Euros to scrap any vehicle over nine years old and replace it with a new model. The scheme has been hailed as an economic success with record sales in February 2009.

- Bikes for Everyone in South Africa
A project that aims to provide a bike for everyone in South Africa has gained support from the Johannesburg Department of Transport. The Shova Kalula (Bicycles for Everyone) project seeks to establish a bicycle manufacturing plant in South Africa to produce one million bicycles by 2014. The project forms part of government’s action programme and is expected to contribute to government’s anti-poverty strategy and second economy interventions. This is a great scheme promoting the use of non-motorised transport, especially for low-income households.

- World’s Cheapest Car Hits the Road
Six years after the idea was hatched, the world’s cheapest car - the much-hyped Tata Nano - has been launched in New Delhi, India. The Nano has been nicknamed “The People’s Car” because its starting price of just US $2000 which makes it more accessible than any other new car on the market. With its 11.8-inch dinner-plate-size wheels and a single windshield wiper, the Nano has already drawn some unflattering comparisons to kitchen appliances and garden tools. The launch of the Nano is expected to revolutionise the auto industry and turn around automakers fortunes suffering from the financial crisis. However, some car experts are unconvinced the Nano will succeed as is built to Indian safety specifications, which would not serve all markets, like Europe and the US. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,510196,00.html

Have a look at this interesting innovation coming from Japan. It is not specified which weight can be lifted with it, but it seems to work and deserves to be promoted. In addition, the movie is short and funny.
