Does ‘Citizens for Jobs NOW’ support the Canal?

By Mark | May 15, 2009 |

I think its curious that some individuals who vigorously oppose the Canal are public supporters of “Citizens for Jobs Now”. This organization says that it supports ALL infrastructure Jobs. The Canal definitely would qualify under that description. Now I’m sure this can be rationalized away but it is a great litmus test for “Citizens for Jobs NOW”. However, it has not specifically mentioned the Canal project. Its time that it did.

People will want to pidgeonhole this group into a pro or anti mayor group. I empathise with this because being a supporter of many of the mayor’s initiatives but a critic of a few, I find myself a “man without a country” many times. Will Citizens for Jobs now overcome this obstacle of the “Your with us or against us” mentality that prevails in Windsor?

Sorry trying to type post from iPhone and it didn’t work
Good. Title though. Hopedully it’s enough to start a discussion.
    Heck , less is more

I called citizens for jobs now and the person who answered the phone said they unconditionally supported all infrastructure spending

That’s one of the problems I have with narrow-focus groups like that (see the construction lobby as well) as long as it provides jobs, they’re behind it.

Everything must be put in the context of increasing quality of life for Windsorites, and quality of life isn’t just a high income.

What if someone wanted to build a nuclear reactor on Zalev Bros land? Would they be behind that as well because it brought jobs to the region?

I can’t believe it….was Mark at a loss for words? :) I guess theres a first for everything.

I still can’t support something that is based on giving a return on investment IF, and thats a big IF, development happens around it. Isn’t that what was supposed to happen with Canderel? The Casino? St. Clair in the DT?

With the AGW at that site, how about turning that entire area into a cultural district? Build a state of the art library & social space? Click on the link and read up on this library which is more than just a library. If you want people visiting the core you have to give them an experience and multiple destinations in very close vicinity to one another. Yes I know the city has begun a study for a children’s museum and that is great, but, it can be done without a canal.

If people are not motivated to build and live on the beautiful riverfront we currently, what makes you think a 3 block ditch will do it?

First before anything, proper incentives, plans and public input is needed before ANYTHING proceeds. Just building something because someone is offering money is no reason to build it.

Aside from the actual cost to build it, maintenance costs and the use of treated municipal water (which is a cost, whether direct or indirect) are two costs that Windsor would be paying FOR LIFE. We can’t be saying a few years down the road, “It’s too expensive to keep running, lets empty it out and shut it down.”

Windsor Visuals in a recent post reminded people of Mayor Hurst’s excellent, multiple award winning plan for developing the riverfront. That plan would do more than any canal in bringing in development, tourists and locals to the core.

Sorry the post is a little scattered, but, I didn’t have a lot of time to post something. I’ll try to add more later.

“they unconditionally supported all infrastructure spending”

^ This sort of lowers my hopes for this group (-.-)

This is hilarious! Bosco is getting more feedback on an empty blog post than I usually get on a post I’ve worked days on!

    It’s a good thing I don’t have an inferiority complex ;)

Once again the city is only building the INFRASTRUCTURE IE; Canal portion only. The private developers are building the retail, housing component.
You know what? Forget it! Why bother it MIGHT fail. We will compare INFRASTRUCTURE to a building because that comparison is equal. Why bother trying at all! What’s the pont everything fails. So let’s keep the status quo and lament what “could” have been or what we did wrong in the past. Yup! The future is bright! Go get ‘em Windsor!

any wonder why ths city hasn’t grown or even had forward thinking in 40 years! Once again we are our own worst enemy.

Adriano, Can you please email me. I need that list we spoke about for the committee. Thanks.

Dave, don’t get discouraged, I like how this debate is going. No name calling, more negotiating and horse trading going on. Do you think that your house would have been safe had you not clearly laid out your objection early in the game? Kudo’s to you for making a demand that will benefit the end product, a demand that sees the existing neighborhood built upon instead of being replaced

Investment in the core, no one has offered a viable alternative for this land. Prospects for a canal are looking good. Oklahoma, here we come!!!!!

A little premature but if the worst criticism we can find is that the Residents association gets a special presentation then woohoo!!!! I’m popping corks

Power to the people! er, um, residents association!!!!
