Keeping you in the loop…
Hey everyone. You know that the folks here at SD want nothing more than to see you - the engaged citizen of Windsor - patronizing your local independant businessperson, right? Well, whenever we get word of something going on we’ll pass it along to you. Heard of something yourself that you feel would be of interest to your fellow SD communitarians? Drop us a line ([email protected]) and let us know about it, OK?
Winter Bites
Our intrepid friends over at WindsorEats are at it again. They’re skills may be photographing food for money, but their hearts are committed to working with Windsor’s local, independant restauranteurs in building their businesses. If you don’t know the difference between a chain’s version of dinner and an indy’s version, you really need to get over to WindsorEats and find an indy near you to experiece a REAL culinary treat. From their Website…
From January 18-24, 2009 participating Winter Bites restaurants are offering 3 course meals for only $25 (not including beverages, taxes or tips). There are some great deals to be had during this week. Adriano has been busy posting menus online all week and they are gooooood!
We need your help in spreading the word about what we think is a great event in Windsor. We want to ensure that the event is a success this year so that we can do it again next year. Download a Winter Bites poster today and tell your friends!
New indy pharmacy in Olde Walkerville
Earlier this past summer I wrote about how sad (or thrilled, depending on his mood) my dog was when The Hounds Of Walkerville closed at the corner of Wyandotte and Windermere (1701 Wyandotte Road East). All is not lost, however, as renovations have been completed and the storefront is now reopened.
The Olde Walkerville Pharmacy has been opened up by Walkerville wunderboy Francesco Vella, the gentleman who is breathing new life into the Lowe/Martin house on Ontario Street. Now that there’s a locally owned pharmacy in the ‘hood, you can have confidence that the money you spend on your prescription medications not only stays in the City of Windsor to be circulated amongst other taxpayers, but by changing where you fill your ’scripts you are also helping to preserve one of Windsor’s finest and most historic private residences. You’ll also save some cash as well. Francesco’s dispensing fee ($10.99) is $1.00 less than that of Shoppers ($11.99) - the only other pharmacy within walking distance! Say no more - I’m changing now. They are just putting the finishing touches on an office for a doctor on premises as well, so if you or someone you know of is a physician who would like to set up practise in one of the best neighbourhoods in the city, be sure to give Francesco a call at 519-255-9161, or email [email protected]
Environmental Shorts and The Story of Stuff
Tonight, at the Windsor Worker’s Action Centre, catch-up on the ongoing Short Attention Span Festival. A collection of environmentally themed shorts followed by The Story of Stuff:
“From its extraction through sale, use and disposal, all the stuff in our lives affects communities at home and abroad, yet most of this is hidden from view. The Story of Stuff is a 20-minute, fast-paced, fact-filled look at the underside of our production and consumption patterns. The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It’ll teach you something, it’ll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever.”
Every Friday night at 7:00pm various grassroots organizations will show a free movie with a discussion afterwards at the Windsor Workers Action Centre.
Show your love for the Capitol Theatre
Come on out to the Capitol Theatre this Sunday at 3:00 PM and help show the communty that you haven’t forgot about this old girl.
Michelle Mainwaring has organized a clean-up and face-lift to bring the Capitol up to snuff. Anyone who knows the history of the legal saga for this building knows that the community needs to keep this issue in the public eye. It’s criminal that this has been going on for so long.
So, grab your glass cleaner, rags, ladders, etc. and head on down to 121 University Ave West to lend a hand. Michelle has gone out of her way to provide light-bulbs (out of her own pocket, BTW. She is accepting donations to help over the $200+ cost of the bulbs) so you can help light up the building, just like the good old days.
Call Michelle (519-727-4785) if you can offer your support either financially or through some sweatwork. On Facebook? Visit her page here. This is a great way to show your support for this beautiful historic building.
Thank you, Chris!
